Consular services — practical notes
Passports & travel documents
Renewals and replacements for a lost or damaged passport are handled by the consular section. Bring photo ID (or a copy of your old passport), passport photos to local spec, and a police report if the passport was lost or stolen. See the passport-loss steps below.
Notarization, apostille & document legalization
Powers of attorney, life certificates, and signature/copy certification are done by appointment. Korean public documents for use abroad are apostilled by Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs; your embassy legalizes documents only where the apostille does not apply.
Visas for Canada
Most missions now route visa applications through an online system or an outsourced visa centre rather than a counter. Start on the official website and do not send your passport anywhere that is not linked from it.
Emergency assistance
Hospitalization, arrest, being a victim of crime, or a death in the family: contact the consular section during hours, or the after-hours emergency line listed on the official website. Consulates cannot pay bills, act as lawyers, or override Korean law.
If you lose your passport in Korea
- Report the loss to Korean police — Go to any police station (or call 112) and ask for a written Confirmation of Report for a lost/stolen passport. You will need this document for both your embassy and Korea Immigration.
- Contact your embassy's consular section — Call or visit as early in the day as possible. Use the after-hours emergency line only for genuine emergencies (hospitalization, arrest, death, imminent travel).
- Prepare your documents — Police report, one or two passport photos, any surviving photo ID or a copy of your passport bio-data page, proof of onward travel, and the fee (card acceptance varies — carry cash).
- Collect your emergency travel document or new passport — Processing time ranges from same-day to several weeks depending on the country and whether a full passport or a single-use travel document is issued.
- Clear the record with Korea Immigration before departure — Visit an immigration office (information: 1345) to register the lost passport and link your new document to your Korean entry record, so you can exit without problems.
